A lot of venom is being spewed (largely by wedding photographers) regarding Vogue’s 10 Wedding Rules to break article, which states that you are better off getting friends to shoot your wedding with their iPhones and post them on Instagram or Facebook, but I think the anger is misguided.

The fact is, everyone is different and everyone values different things. While I might want to spend a fortune on wedding photography — because I truly want to see the moments I might have missed on my special day — others prefer to remember the great food or music or the dwarf that popped out of the cake right before you cut into it for the first time.

There is no right or wrong way to have a wedding and there are certainly no rules to break. Traditions are generational and what mattered yesterday might not matter today. The most important thing to remember about your wedding day is to not let anyone else tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. If you feel like you’re losing control, take a step back, breathe and realize that this is just a party and parties are meant to be fun.

If you are not having fun and are seriously feeling stressed — give elopement serious consideration. Your vows are meant for you and your significant other — not for anyone else. If you want to get married on Fiji by a witch doctor during a super moon — that’s what you should do. Just don’t forget that my passport is valid and I will travel anywhere, especially Fiji.
